To celebrate the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, Kai Tak Sogo has joined hands with the Hongwen Charitable Foundation, the Hong Kong Celebration Association 1, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology of the University of Hong Kong 2, and other co-organizers to present the Tangka exhibition 'Blessings from the Snowy Land' for the first time.
Carefully prepared for many years, the exhibition will feature a number of large-scale Tangkas from highland areas such as Qinghai and Inner Mongolia. The exhibition will showcase 19th and 20th-century Tangkas, allowing the public to appreciate the profound art and culture of this core region of Tibetan Buddhism. As one of the most important integrated development areas in Hong Kong, the Kai Tak District is hosting the first large-scale Tangkas art exhibition in the new retail landmark, located in the heart of Kowloon East. Its prime location will enable a wider audience to appreciate the exquisite Tangkas art and comprehend the profound Buddhist philosophy, finding peace and blessings amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. It will also promote the inheritance and protection of Tangkas art, ensuring the continuity of this precious cultural treasure, which is of great significance.
Ms. Liu Hongwenyan, the initiator of the exhibition and representative of the Hongwen Charitable Foundation, said, 'In addition to touching the soul, Tangkas painting also conveys blessings. Therefore, the exhibition is named 'Blessings from the Snowy Land', hoping to bring blessings to every visitor, making them feel peaceful and calm as they enter the venue.'
Tangkas, a transliteration from Tibetan, means smoothness and extension. It is a unique form of scroll painting and is considered a treasure of Tibetan Buddhist art. Tangkas are rich in content and diverse in subject matter, covering Buddhist figures, Bodhisattvas, deities, dharma protectors, historical figures, mythical stories, astronomy, medicine, and more. With vibrant colors, intricate lines, and a unique artistic style, Tangkas showcase distinct ethnic characteristics and strong religious overtones, always regarded as precious treasures.
The rise of Tangkas art is not only a process of illustrating abstract and profound Buddhist concepts for Tibetan Buddhists but also a form of painting expression with a unique artistic style. The craftsmanship of Tangkas is extremely refined, with a distinct painting technique. From composition to line drawing, coloring, facial rendering, and gold decoration, each step strictly follows rituals and norms. The artists use fine cotton or silk fabric for the base and natural mineral pigments such as gold, silver, and vermilion, creating lasting and vibrant colors. After completing the coloring, gold threads are used to outline the details, and finally, the artwork is mounted to create a complete piece. Each step embodies the artist's devout faith and exquisite skills, and Tangkas from different regions and schools showcase a variety of styles and techniques, together forming a colorful world of Tangkas art. The process of creating a Tangkas is complex and rigorous, and it is a form of spiritual practice in itself. Artists undergo years of rigorous training to master the essence of this art form. Every Tangkas embodies the artist's devout heart and exquisite skills, making it not only artistically valuable but also deeply significant in religious and cultural aspects.
Ms. Liu added, 'This exhibition is extremely significant in terms of artistic value. We not only showcase precious Tangkas artworks but also hope that young people can appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship and historical value, including the use of precious mineral pigments, to deepen their understanding of this traditional art form. We believe that through these exhibits, visitors can enhance their aesthetic appreciation and find peace within.'
